LinkedIn for Authors

LinkedIn is a tool that’s helpful for networking, but it may be difficult determining how to use this platform as an author. It CAN be a wonderful platform for authors, though, if done correctly.

Here are some things you can do to optimize your profile on LinkedIn and best utilize the platform:

Your “About” Section and Title

You about section – also known as your bio – is one of the first things people see on your page. So it should be succinct in telling visitors who you are and what you do.

You could include here a synopsis of your career as an author, description of your current release, upcoming release information, and contact details for readers and media inquiries. Your bio is searchable, so utilize keywords to your advantage. Remember that LinkedIn allows you to edit your title—which is also a great spot to market your book!

Your Profile Photo

Having a solid head shot is key. This, along with your bio, is your first impression to your readers/visitors to your page. Make sure your profile photo is a good/professional one.

Plan your Posts

Much like on other networks, you can share text, links, photos, and videos on your LinkedIn profile and these will show up in your connections’ feeds. This can be used for promoting upcoming book releases, author events, or to showcase reviews, among other things.

Utilize high quality images or graphics and videos as much as possible. You could even apply to LinkedIn live so you could go live on that platform to connect with readers.

Connect, Connect, Connect

Search for and discover connections you'd like to make. Utilize the "suggested connections" area to find connections as well. Connection is whole point of the platform. This could be fellow authors, agents, others in the publishing industry, book marketers, author virtual assistants (you can certainly find me there!), and more. You should also message connections and interact with people regularly.

As an author, growing your network will make your online presence stronger. Properly setting up your LinkedIn profile, posting consistently, and making connections can be very effective ways to extend your reach as an author and promote your book(s).
