Delegation: How and When it Can Help
Let's talk delegation!
Let’s face it. There are a LOT of moving parts to being an author. From writing to editing, cover design to gathering reviews, brand building to marketing, and everything in between.
There are numerous steps, third party sites, many pieces to the puzzle.
So when is it appropriate or necessary to delegate tasks?
If there are tasks that you:
-Don’t like doing
-Aren’t “good” at
-Take up too much of your time that could be spent writing or doing other necessary things
It may be time to delegate/get help.
Start here:
Make a list of all of your tasks
Assign a level of delegation authority to each task
Level 1: Must do on your own
Level 2: You should do, but someone may be able to provide insight
Level 3: You should do, but others may be able to help with if given opportunity
Level 4: Someone else could do, but you an help in emergency
Level 5: You should delegate
Delegate tasks that are in levels 4 and 5 to start
How to know to whom you should delegate certain tasks?
Consider the following:
-Someone who has experience doing that particular task
-Someone who has potential to grow with you
-Someone who fits you/your organization (attitude, personality, work ethic, etc)
-Someone who has the time to take on your responsibilities at 100% level
-Someone who can do the task at your level or better
-Someone you can trust to complete the task at hand successfully
But how can I afford to hire someone when I'm not making money from my book yet?
Valid question. However, think of it this way. Can you afford not to? Is what you are currently doing working? Would more time to focus on writing and other critical aspects of your author journey help you work toward increasing your bottom line? Is there someone else who knows how to do specific tasks better than you? Could this person help you through these processes more effectively?
Just something to consider.
It's not a bad thing to need and ask for help. I PROMISE YOU that the hugely successful authors you see out there are not going It alone. They have a team behind them helping them get where they are going.
